Chapter 296
"Since you're doing fine, I'll leave after dinner. Call me if anything comes up. Once you wrap things here, come and find me in Greenfield City," Edward said.
Hearing this, Robert couldn't help but feel his son had truly grown up.
"Calvin and Matilda will be back later. Go ahead and continue with your work."
After Barbara informed them, Calvin and Matilda both made their way home. By 4:30 pm, the Moore residence was lively again.noveldrama
The Swanwick couple arrived as well.
"Mr. Moore, is this your eldest son?" Kellan asked with a smile. "He's quite the impressive young man."
"Thank you, Mr. Swanwick," Calvin replied with a polite smile. "Dinner's ready. Please take your seat."
"Your younger brother hasn't arrived yet, right? No rush."
The Swanwick couple assumed Edward hadn't returned yet.
Myra went straight to the point. "Edward is upstairs in the study. He's been swamped lately-dealing with company matters and liaising with the Historical Artifacts Conservancy. On top of that, he's been taking care of his girlfriend."
The room fell silent.
Everyone knew why the Swanwicks had brought their youngest daughter, Lysette, along tonight.
Myra's blunt mention of Edward having a girlfriend left the Swanwicks visibly uncomfortable.
Terry glanced at Myra before saying, "Why don't you go call Edward down? His girlfriend probably isn't feeling well and went to bed early. He should eat something before heading back to Greenfield City to be with her."
And just like that, he left the Swanwicks no room to object.
The Swanwick couple wouldn't dare show displeasure in front of Terry.
Fiora Calloway, Lysette's mother, forced a smile. "Of course. If his girlfriend isn't feeling well, he should be there for her. Young women need that kind of care."
"Let's take our seats." Barbara gestured to everyone at the dining table.
Logically, the Swanwick family didn't deserve to be personally hosted by the Moores: The difference in their social standing was just too great. But the Moores weren't the type to use their power to bully others. To them, every guest was treated with the utmost respect.
As Fiora walked alongside Barbara and Myra, she remarked, "Young women these days are so delicatez aren't they? It's good to give them extra attention, though I'm sure it must be distracting for your son. My daughter, on the other hand, has always been a tomboy. It's been such a headache for me. A woman should be gentle and soft-spoken, don't you think, Mrs. Moore?"
Myra raised an eyebrow. Complimenting one while taking a jab at the other?
Women from real political families wouldn't say such things out loud. They'd keep their opinions to themselves.
Wasn't it obvious that Fiora looked down on Edward's girlfriend?
After just one encounter, Myra had already mentally pegged the Swanwick couple as out of touch.
Barbara simply smiled as she took her seat. "Edward's girlfriend works hard too. She helps him manage the company, and it's been exhausting for her Women tend to have weaker constitutions, you know? I went to see her the other day, and she's lost weight. He's been so worried about her."
As she spoke, her gaze shifted to the far end of the room. "Edward, come greet our guests."
It was "guests" and not "elders".
Everyone turned to look.
Lysette, who had been calm and collected, felt her composure waver the moment she saw him. She had only met him twice before-once at his high school graduation party and once at his grandfather's funeral.
Years later, Edward had only grown more striking.
A faint smile played on Lysette's lips as she subtly nodded to Fiora. It was a signal
of approval.
What do you think?
