Chapter 59
Chapter 59 The Myriad
Since The Myriad opened its gilt doors to guests two years ago, it had never had a quiet night.
For twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, an exciting buzz filled the casino's atmosphere.
Guests in tuxedoes and glittering dresses moved around in the rich and beautiful surroundings.
If and when they grew tired from the endless offerings of entertainment, they could refresh themselves at any
of the twelve top-rated restaurants and salons, or retire to the magnificent suites with round-the-clock services
at hand.
The casino's tight security and dedication to discretion made it a regular hangout for celebrities, society figures
and high-flying businessmen.
Of course, like any other such establishment, The Myriad also had a long list of personae non gratae.
Accompanied by two bodyguards, Darya marched through the main floor and headed straight to the manager's
office.
She identified herself as Paragon's vice president and declined the manager's invitation to try out the plethora of games-she used to enjoy them, but had since outgrown her fondness for games of chance.
Sitting in the leather chair meant for the boss, she scrolled through the electronic records of the casino's profit and loss accounts for the past three years.
Imogen Riley, the manager, stood in front of the desk, trying but failing to hide her
nervousness.
Darya noticed the beads of sweat on the manager's forehead and said nothing. She had used the past day to take a crash course in forensic accounting.
She wouldn't be able to pass the test for Certificate in Financial Forensics, but was equipped with enough knowledge to identify holes in the accounts. Avery was right to be suspicious.
The casino's profit took a deep dive last year despite the growth in customer visits.
Something was definitely off here.
While she let Imogen sweat, Darya ruled out fictitious accounts, ghost employees,
fake vendors and fraudulent expense reimbursements.
She was starting to see the problem-it was not so much fraud as bad management.
The balance in Accounts Receivable had reached a staggering amount, which indicated an inability to collect funds owed to the casino.
Darya reorganised the list of debtors by the amount owed and was surprised to discover a familiar name at the

top. 'Felicia Cavanaugh?
She looked up at Imogen. It says here she owes fifty million to the casino Some of the deer is more than a year old. Why haven't you collected from her? Nor is there a record of interest scor
She tapped a finger on the glossy desk. If I recall correctly. The Myriad i regeered as a for pre cry
not a charity.'
Imogen shuffled her feet on the plush carpet, feeling the heat of the VP interrogaton se hos dess Miss Cavanaugh enjoys a higher-than-usual credit limit. I believe
'I'm not against the casino extending credit to its clients, Darya cut her off Tm well aware of the policy. What I'm asking is, why haven't you collected on the debt?"
Imogen wrung her hands. 'Well, as you know, she's a member of the Cavanaugh family
'So?'
'The Cavanaughs have more than enough assets to pay off the debt. It's just a matter of timing-
'Have you actually called Felicia and asked her for the money?"
Imogen stared at the floor. 'Miss Cavanaugh gets upset if we mention the funds due."
'And you don't want to upset the precious Miss Cavanaugh' Darya shook her head.
She made a mental note to suggest a replacement for the manager once Avery got back from his business trip
overseas.
Running a casino required more than just customer service and administration skills.
Imogen might have a Master of Business Administration degree, but she didn't have the thick skin necessary to survive in a business that was oftentimes legally and morally murky.
Imogen knew the young vice president had put her in the black books.
She was in trouble.
At first, she'd thought the girl, who introduced herself as Darya Miller, was wet behind the ears, just someone who'd somehow slept her way to the top and was eager to throw her weight around.
She disliked Darya's haughty attitude and commanding tone.
She would have told the girl what's what, but President Avery had called earlier and explicitly ordered her to comply with all of Miss Miller's requests.
Partially to redeem herself and partially to set a challenge, Imogen suggested, 'Miss Miller, Miss Cavanaugh happens to be here tonight. Would you like to talk to her?'
Darya saw through the manager's plan straightaway.
If she failed to recover the fifty million dollars from Felicia tonight, she'd be in no position to criticise Imogen.
Smiling, Darya pushed to her feet. 'Sure. Lead the way.'noveldrama

Felicis had simost cancelled her plan to visit The Myriad tonight
Nothing had gone right for her ever since that woman and Mich got divorced.
walther
for reasons she could never understand, her brother sided with that women
Her friends made fun of her after she got tossed out of Pemide, a spa which happened to be owned by Avery McAllister, who, again for reasons unknown to her, seemed to be bewitchby Darya Miller.
The more she thought about it, the more Felicia was convinced that she and Darya were karmic opposites
Like matter and antimatter, one was bound to destroy the other if they came into contact
Cursing her string of bad luck, Felicia decided to have some fun by herself tonight.
She avoided her friends' usual hangouts and headed for The Myriad. Clad in an emerald green Herve Leger bandage dress, she strutted into the casino on a pair of Christian Louboutins, clutching a Chanel 2.55 handbag
As usual, she found her way to a blackjack table and ordered a flute of Cristal champagne.
The table was reserved for high rollers, with a minimum bet to play of $100,000 The dealer flashed a charming smile at Felicia as he dealt the cards.
'Hit me.' Felicia asked for another card as she downed the champagne.
The next player stood,
Felicia doubled down without checking her cards.
Unsurprisingly, she went bust and lost the round,
'Shit!' Felicia cursed loudly and gestured at a passing waiter for another flute of
champagne.
'May 1?' A tall man in a black tuxedo appeared next to her.
