Chapter 61
Chapter 61 The Roper
Felicia had a Jack, a Queen and a six.
The dealer had a Jack and an eight.
She went bust.
The dealer won.
Felicia's mind froze.
She couldn't believe she'd lost again.
The dealer collected the scattered cards and shuffled them calmly, waiting for her to decide which piece of jewellery to pawn next.
While Felicia was torn between leaving and continuing, the tuxedoed stranger slipped out of the crowd into a corner behind a roulette table.
'You did well.' Imogen patted his shoulder.
Neal Annable smiled. 'She was easy.'
While his official title was 'customer service representative,' Neal liked to think of himself as 'the roper,' the bait to lure the inexperienced and unguarded newcomers into willingly opening their wallets and then emptying them.
He considered it a good night's work if the mark left the casino with nothing but the shirt on their back. Felicia Cavanaugh was no newcomer, but she ranked among the top three easiest marks Neal had ever worked.
Usually, he'd give her a wide berth on account of her family name.
But tonight, the boss had called on him for his particular skill set.
The reason was standing next to Imogen and examining the jade ring handed over by the pit clerk.
'Miss Miller. Neal flashed his trademark grin at the girl who might be his boss's boss. 'I hope I didn't disappoint tonight."
Darya returned his smile. 'You did a fine job.'
She had never planned on confronting Felicia directly when she agreed to come down to the main floor with
Imogen.
Talking to Felicia would be a waste of time.
Instead, she asked Imogen to get her the best roper in the business.
The manager gasped in surprise.

The jade ring was the icing on the cake
She had seen it once, back when she was still living with the Cavanaughs.
It belonged to the old Mr Cavanaugh's prized jewellery collection.
She overheard Judy bragging that it was passed down from the Cavanaughs' ancestors, who were supposedly members of an ancient royal family.
Felicia made a big mistake in giving up the ring
The dealer had undervalued it at five million dollars.
At an auction, it could easily fetch triple the price.
Darya played with the ring and wondered if she should give it to her father or her big brother.
Her dad wasn't a fan of jewellery, but he sure would get a kick out of knowing it was once owned by Morton Cavanaugh,
'Darya Miller, you bitch!
Darya didn't need to look up to know the source of that angry voice.noveldrama
Felicia barrelled towards Darya, stumbling on her high heels. 'I knew it! You set me up!"
Imogen stepped in to block her approach. 'Miss Cavanaugh, you need to stay back.'
Felicia let out an enraged scream and scratched the manager's face with her dagger-sharp nails, 'Fuck off!'
Imogen hissed in pain.
Neal Annable grabbed Felicia's right wrist. 'Miss, you need to calm down.'
'Get away from me! Felicia screamed again. 'You were in on this! The game was rigged!'
Rage burned in her eyes.
Her breath stank of alcohol as she poured out a string of curses. 'I'm going to sue you! All of you!'
Darya kept herself out of harm's range. 'Miss Cavanaugh, if there's going to be a lawsuit, you'd be the defendant. You owe The Myriad a hundred million dollars, half of which is long overdue.'
'You tricked me!'

"The casino's covered by CCTV cameras. If you have any doubts regarding the games tonight of any other right you visited our establishment, I'd be more than happy to supply you with a copy of the tape when you've sobered up, that is."
Your establishment? Felicia's eyes widened in disbelief.
'The Myriad is owned by the Paragon Group. Don't you know that?
Felicia shrieked. 'No!'
She kicked and struggled against Neal's hold on her, but he was a head taller than her and at least twenty eg
heavier
"If·
f your account is not settled within forty-eight hours, Morton, Judy and Micah Cavanaugh will each get a lawyer's letter. Legal action will be taken if they fail to pay the outstanding debt. Darya played with the jade ring. 'I'm sure your family will be happy to help you out."
Felicia stopped struggling.
She glared at Darya out of hate-filled eyes. 'You can't do that."
'I can and I will, unless a hundred million dollars is transferred to The Myriad's account within forty-eight hours.' Darya checked her wristwatch. 'And the countdown starts now.'
The message finally got through, but Felicia still refused to believe it.
She knew Darya Miller had hooked herself a new sugar daddy.
She knew the woman was now vice president of Paragon.
But all of that must be temporary.
Darya Miller was a nobody.
She couldn't possibly be smart enough or important enough to run a casino.
Everything Felicia knew about the woman came from their three years of living under the same roof.
Darya Miller, the gold-digger.
Darya Miller, the unpaid servant.
Darya Miller, the low-class, unemployed opportunist who tried to worm her way
into the Cavanaughs' lives.
Darya Miller, the parasite.
Felicia felt blood rushing to her head.
How dare the woman demand money from her?
The humiliation of being indebted to Darya Miller was worse than the pain of
losing a hundred million dollars
Felicia's body trembled as rage coursed through her alcohol-filled veins. 'I will pay you back! Just you wait and see! A hundred mil is chump change to people like
us. But of course, someone like you will never have seen so much money in your
pathetic life. Is that why you are so eager to ask for the money back?'
She threw her head back and jutted out her chin. 'Consider it payment for services rendered. After all, you did
