Chapter 388
Just as Miranda was about to take a sip of her coffee, her phone buzzed with a message from Charles.
The moment she saw the message, her brows furrowed slightly.noveldrama
"Crow's Eye?" she murmured to herself, rolling the words over her tongue. She'd seen that name pop up occasionally on the dark web forums, mentioned by a handful of anonymous users. But she had never paid it much mind.
[Logan hired this group to come to Virell,] the message continued, [Their target seems to be a recently unearthed artifact from the Metropolitan Museum. And you might be on their list too.]
Attached to the message was some intel on "Crow's Eye," a mercenary group that had risen to prominence in the last three years, known for their exorbitant fees and their uncanny ability to operate without leaving a trace. Even military forces found them untouchable. Once hired, they never failed a mission. But their services came at a steep price, and the group was notoriously dangerous, so only the boldest dared to engage them.
[What's noteworthy is that this group seems to have some sort of special abilities. I don't know what they are, and no one else does either. But from my research, they're definitely not like ordinary people. If you encounter danger, I suggest seeking military protection.]
Miranda raised an eyebrow. It was clear Charles was worried about her. He'd never suggested she seek protection before.
[Got it,] she replied succinctly.
Charles quickly sent over images of a few Crow's Eye members. [I could only gather some basic profiles, not much detail, but take a look.]
As Miranda scanned through the photos, her expression changed upon seeing one face.
That man? She had just met him yesterday.
[Oh, one more thing,] Charles added. [There's a member in Crow who uses poison. Victims' hearts grow decayed plants, consuming the body as nutrients. Even the Global Health Organization hasn't figured it out yet. Be careful, this person might pose a threat to you.]
Miranda frowned, [Is there a way to get a sample for me?]
Charles replied, [Those bodies are under strict protection by organizations, not easy to access. But I'll see what I can do.]
Miranda simply replied, [Alright.]
Charles retorted, [Boss, I'm out here killing myself to get you info, and all I get is
an 'alright'? You know how much these international scoops cost?]
Miranda replied with a cheeky, [Alright, alright.]
Charles responded with a playful huff, [Fine.]
Miranda then offered, [I'll send you a batch of the new serum.]
Charles perked up, [That's more like it.]
Though unsure what Miranda's new serum entailed, he knew it was bound to be something valuable. Refusing was not an option.
After wrapping up her chat with Charles, Miranda continued scrolling through the dossier. One image stood out-a high-definition photo of a poisoned victim's corpse
She had to admit, Charles had skills. Acquiring such a photo was no small feat, considering how tightly these were guarded.
Just as Charles described, the heart
of the body bore plants, grotesque as if a monstrous, rotting Venus
flytrap had taken root, its tendrilen et
stretching outward. The corpse was decomposed, the body seemingly drained as the roots had pierced through like a ghastly tapestry. The surroundings reeked with toxins, the floor corroded and seared by the venom.
Suddenly, Miranda's eyes widened.
It wasn't poison.
It was witchcraft!
Witchcraft existed in this world too?
In her previous world, alongside NexMed Labs, there were other arcane arts that
persisted. Witchcraft was one of those arts.
And like all arts, it had its dual
nature. Though she practiced
medicine, it could equally be wielded
to harm. Those who practiced witchcraft, however, often leaned towards darker purposes, as their power was partially fueled by the lives they claimed.
Some practitioners, eager for shortcuts, resorted to murder.
She never held much fondness for them.
But to find witchcraft here, in this world.
Her thoughts turned to Sebastian and that patient. Without hesitating, she dialed
his number.
When Sebastian picked up, he sounded a bit surprised.
"I'm coming to see you today. Text me your address."
Without a moment's hesitation, Sebastian sent Miranda his address.
What do you think?
