Not Your Doormat Anymore

Chapter 36

"Martin Crowell! I'm done with you!"

Dr. Crowell's wife stormed in with a crowd of her family members right behind her. She charged at him and started hitting him on the spot.

"Hey, hey! This is all a misunderstanding! Stop! Stop hitting me-don't hit my face! Ouch! Honey, let me explain!"

The conference room descended into chaos. I glanced at Samuel, who still looked like he wanted to continue attacking me, but Dr. Crowell was already overwhelmed with his own scandal. He didn't have the energy to deal with anything else.

Naturally, the meeting ended in complete disorder.

However, things were far from over.noveldrama

I headed straight to the surveillance room. After handing the old man a pack of cigarettes, he happily helped me pull the footage.

Soon, I had a photo of the patient. She was holding her phone and moving around the cardiology department, quietly approaching people, specifically my patients.

Several of them looked outraged after speaking with her. Later, I saw them gather and chat briefly before heading to the nurse to request a new attending physician.

Once I figured out the full picture, I snapped a photo of the patient from the surveillance footage. After thanking the old man again, I sent the image to my private investigator and asked him to look into her.

Then, I returned to my office and went back to work as usual.

What Dr. Crowell did disgusted me, but resigning now would only make me look guilty. I was determined to stay and clear my name.

Soon, a message popped up on my phone. "If you want to prove your innocence, come to this address."

Who was this? The number was unfamiliar. I called, but no one picked up. It would take the investigator at least two or three days to find anything useful, so after some thought, I decided to go.

When I arrived at the bar, I found Casey waiting at the reserved booth. I wasn't all that surprised when I saw her. After all, she was deeply tied to this whole mess. Considering how she had been harassing me lately, it made perfect sense that she would be the one to send that message.

"Jace, you came!" She lit up the moment she saw me, grabbing my hand as if to pull me down beside her.

But I pulled away and looked at her coldly. "Were you behind all this?"

The smile on her face faded a little. "I didn't have a choice. You refused to see me, so this was the only way I could get you to look at me."

I almost laughed. Ruining someone else's reputation just to satisfy her twisted need for attention was typical of Casey. She was ruthless as ever.

"Don't look at me like that. I know that I wronged you. But I've already ended things with Andrew, and I swear, from now on, I'll be completely loyal to you and won't ever cheat again. Isn't that enough?" Her eyes pleaded with me.

Back then, I had done everything to please her, and she barely cared. Now that I had finally let her go, she was suddenly clinging to me. She really was pathetic.

I let out a cold laugh. "Cheat once, and you're done. Why would I ever trust you again?"

"You can record me, and it'll be your leverage. Blackmail me however you want. I swear, I won't make the same mistake."

She raised her hand like she meant it, all solemn and sincere.

I glanced at her, unimpressed. "How many promises like that have you made already?"

And seeing that hopeful expression on her face, I couldn't help but wonder-was she saying all this to hold herself accountable, or did she just want to be punished?

"I'm serious this time. Just give me one more chance, Jace. We used to love each other so much, didn't we?"
