Allison shook her head slightly. “I’m not sure. All I know is, without him, I’d be out on the streets. We’re all each other has.”

Verruckt’s smirk was sharp as a knife’s edge when he heard this.

“Don’t fret. I’ll ensure he’s taken care of financially, so he won’t face hardship.”

To him, a man stripped of wealth was of no value.

Allison’s voice was subdued. “Thank you.”

She looked up at Verruckt, her thoughts seemingly far away.

“The first time I saw you, I was struck by your eyes. But you seemed so formidable then, I only managed a couple of glances. I never dared to speak.”

Allison offered a small smile and continued, “I never expected you to be approachable after all, Mr. Shaw.”

“Is that so? Why don’t you take a closer look now?” Verruckt gently lifted her chin.

Their eyes met, and he found no trace of fear in hers, just quiet curiosity.

“My eyes are a side effect of those drug experiments,” he confessed, drawing closer.

“Many find blood-red eyes to be a bad omen.” His tone was mockingly light. “But I see it as an advantage. It’s better to be feared than scorned.” In his youth, other children avoided him.

The only one who ever held his gaze was subject 001. That girl’s expression was perpetually blank, her eyes devoid of emotion.

Thus, he had always considered 001 his most formidable adversary.

Unaware of his thoughts, Allison fought the impulse to lash out and instead offered a tense smile. “Eyes like gemstones — definitely something to be proud of.” In reality, his blood-red eyes only highlighted his menace.

“I wonder if you’ll feel the same tomorrow night after you see me take that drug,” he mused.

Allison asked innocently, “What if it frightens me?”

Verruckt casually touched the corner of her eye. “If fear overcomes you, just let me gouge your eyes out. Then, you wouldn’t have to see anything at all.” He knew all too well how to preserve Alice’s vision — in the most permanent ways.

Allison thought that Verruckt was nuts. Yet, she was certain that he wasn’t about to actually gouge her eyes out — he was just playing rough.

“Anyway, thanks for bringing me here,” Allison said with an innocent smile as she gazed upward. “So, even if you take my eyes or heart one day, I’ll be without regrets.”

Through Verruckt’s eyes, the woman whose chin he cradled had soft, beautiful eyes. Her smile lit him up, as if bathing him in a warm glow. Though he held the reins, it felt increasingly like Allison was the one taming him. The air between them seemed to thicken with unspoken truths.
