Allison pretended to ask casually, “Today’s the last chance to move the test subjects. Couldn’t the mayor have waited until later to inject you, instead of doing it last night?”

Verruckt gave a mocking laugh. “If he were as sensible as you, I would have killed him a long time ago.” His voice was cold, full of deadly intent.

“He can’t even relax for a day. How scared is he of you turning on him?” Allison let out a sigh. “He’s terrified of you, yet still wants you around. He’s so greedy.”

To her surprise, Verruckt actually responded with patience. “He is afraid of me, that’s true. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have reached out to Josh. But Josh’s ambition has been growing over the past two years, and that’s made the mayor uncertain.” As he spoke, Verruckt absentmindedly rubbed Allison’s wrist.
