Chapter 259 I Have a Witness
Emily paused for a moment, then answered seriously, "Both, I guess."
Isabella felt a sudden pang of heartache and helplessness. She couldn't imagine the timid, submissive life Emily had endured at the Smith Mansion the Brown Villa while she was in a coma. The cold treatment she must have faced was unimaginable.
Right then, Isabella made a firm decision. She was determined to protect Emily and make those who had wronged her pay back double.
"Emily, I won't blame you. You're an adult now, you have your own judgment, and you have the right to pursue your own happiness. As for the divorce with Michael, I won't interfere. If you want to leave, then leave. If you want to stay, then stay. No one can interfere with your decision, not even Michael. Only you can make this decision, okay?" Isabella's words were sincere and heartfelt.
Emily felt a weight lift off her shoulders, as if a dark corner of her heart had been suddenly illuminated. In this world, only Isabella cared so much about her thoughts, about what she wanted and what she did.
"Thank you, Mom." With that, Emily threw herself into Isabella's warm embrace, starting to act spoiled, to laugh and talk, to be herself like a child without any reservations.
The hospital room, which should have been filled with the smell of disinfectant, seemed suddenly filled with the scent of lilies from the bedside table.
Time flew by, and the day of the final trial arrived quickly. That day, Emily wore a black coat, her hair tied up in a simple low bun, and black patent leather high heels with sparkling rhinestones. With exquisite makeup and a strong presence, she was the first to appear in the courtroom.
Sophia and Evelyn, sitting in the audience, were momentarily stunned when they saw her walk in gracefully.
"Why is she dressed like that?" Sophia asked nervously, recalling Michael's strange behavior that day.
Evelyn, still confident of victory, scoffed and mocked, "Why else? She knows she can't win, so she's trying to intimidate people with her appearance. Isn't it obvious? Anyone can put on a facade, but only real skills can win!"
Sophia turned to look at Evelyn with disdain. Evelyn, seeing this, frowned and replied, "What, am I wrong?"
Sophia couldn't be bothered to argue with Evelyn anymore and turned her head to look towards the door. Seeing that no one was following Emily, her nervousness instantly eased.
On the stand, Hayden saw Emily sitting at the plaintiff's table and, confident of his victory, let out a disdainful snort. His lawyer beside him asked, "Mr. Brown, is this the daughter who doesn't respect you? In all my years of practicing law, I've rarely seen a daughter sue her own father!"
Hayden said, "Yes, you weren't here last time, you didn't see how fierce she was! It's clear she wants to set her own father up to fail. Fortunately, I turned the tide, or else at my age, I'd have nothing left because of her!" Hayden's voice was loud, clearly intending for everyone in the hall to hear.
Of course, Emily heard it too.
She kept her face blank, coldly staring at Hayden. Her gaze was so intense that Hayden couldn't help but feel a bit intimidated, and he quickly looked away.
The father and daughter locked eyes for a long time before the trial finally began.
Hayden, confident of victory, was relaxed throughout, even following his lawyer's lead with arrogance and smugness.
Emily, on the other hand, remained solemn.
Evelyn was the first to draw a conclusion. "Look at Emily, she looks so unlucky. I think she won't have many good days left! Sophia, how can she be so stupid? She's lived for over twenty years, but she can't win a man's heart, and doesn't even care about her family's dignity. Her mother is lying in bed, half-dead..."
"Enough." Sophia couldn't bear to listen to Evelyn's nonsense any longer.
Despite her words, she couldn't help but worry.
Since Emily was suing the Brown family, how could she be fighting a losing battle?
Watching Hayden commit perjury, did Emily not know how to fight back?
The more she thought about it, the more anxious she became, and Evelyn's mocking words only made her more uneasy.
Evelyn scolded, "Sophia, you've been touchy lately! What did I say that upset you? Or have you suddenly developed a conscience and feel sorry for Emily?
"Well, you might be too late. She's now backed by the Watson family, not the Smith family. You can't compete with her for the same man... Actually, the Watson family isn't bad. At least they don't have as many issues as the Smith family!
"Besides, if you marry into the Watson family, Emily will still have to live under your shadow! If that happens, our family will prosper."
Evelyn spoke lightly, and Sophia couldn't help but 'appreciate' her unique way of thinking. "The Watson family? The head of the Watson family is currently going through a divorce, and Mr. Watson has always..."
"Always what?" Evelyn pressed for details.noveldrama
Reluctantly, Sophia had to come up with an excuse to brush her off.
Could she tell Evelyn that Bryan had never liked her and had always looked down on her?
Time passed quickly, and soon it was time for the final verdict. The judge solemnly announced the next phase, and both sides began to present their evidence.
At this moment, the audience started whispering and discussing again.
Because Emily had remained silent throughout, and now, at the crucial moment of presenting evidence, she coldly handed the judge a recording pen. "This is all my evidence."
Hayden, seeing this, thought Emily was joking.
If he had known, he wouldn't have been so cautious, and should have just treated it as
a game with her.
Thinking that the Brown Corporation would still be his, with the previous perjury and the high-priced lawyer he had hired, he believed victory was only a matter of time. Hayden couldn't help but smile at Emily.
At the same time, the judge asked, "Ms. Brown, is this your only evidence?"
"No." Emily finally raised her eyes, seriously staring at Hayden, causing his smile to
freeze and his guilty eyes to dodge. She continued, "I also have a witness, right outside the door. You can summon them at any time."
What do you think?
