Chapter 502 More Important
"Emily, I've messed up so much in this life, and I can never make it up to you. But I swear, I'll do everything I can to make it right," Michael's voice was low and determined, his eyes filled with guilt and resolve.
Emily could see it clearly; every word Michael said came straight from the heart.
But what should she do?
Just forgive him? Go back to how things were?
If it were that simple, she wouldn't be so conflicted now.
Emily sighed softly, her gaze complex as she glanced at Michael, her mind a tangled mess of emotions.
She knew well that matters of the heart couldn't be erased with a single stroke, and years of scars couldn't heal easily.
Forgiving Michael now would only lead to repeating the same mistakes. Besides, marriage wasn't just about the two of them; it involved their families too.
Michael didn't come from an ordinary family. The Smith Mansion was a web of complicated relationships.
After finally reaching this point of stability, was she really willing to throw herself back into that endless turmoil?
Emily's heart was filled with contradictions. She knew one thing for sure: she couldn't agree to Michael's request just because she was momentarily moved.
"Michael, thanks for thinking of the child, and thanks for saying all this to me. But you know, it's not just about the child," she finally said.
"You know my heart belongs to you. I was wrong in the past; I was a jerk, I was blind. But I know my mistakes now, Emily. How long do you plan to punish me? Does seeing me like this make you feel better?" Michael replied.
Michael was too impulsive, and that was indeed a flaw.
He didn't care who caused all this incident, but it was about the future and reputation
of Smith Corporation, and would affect the livelihoods of hundreds of people.
Emily thought, he always acted according to his own will. Right or wrong, he made the call.
He never takes into account the consequences others have to face.
Thinking of this, Emily's heart trembled. For the sake of the child, she made up her mind and continued to resolutely reject Michael.
"Michael, no one is punishing you." Emily's face was expressionless, her tone calm, but a hint of determination flashed in her eyes. "We're adults now. We have to pay for everything we've done.
"Do you think I'm doing all this for you? You're wrong. I'm doing it for Mason, for my child. I don't want him to be born with a notorious father. Michael, you shouldn't be asking me for anything right now. You should be worried about the real culprit getting away.
"The crisis at Smith Corporation isn't over yet. Mason's lifetime of hard work is still at great risk!"
Michael's face changed drastically upon hearing this, a wave of indescribable pain surging in his heart.
As the president of Smith Corporation, how could he not understand this?
He just wanted to find a perfect solution after the incident, one that could save Smith Corporation and win back Emily's heart.
But how could there be such a perfect solution waiting for him in this world?
At that moment, Michael felt utterly ridiculous.
After that, Michael didn't say anything more.
He knew that saying more would be useless, so he got up and left, his back looking desolate.
Abigail heard the noise and came downstairs, surprised to see Emily alone. "Michael left?"
Everyone thought tonight might finally thaw the ice between Emily and Michael.
But who would have thought Emily would still decisively and rationally reject Michael? Emily knew better than anyone that she wasn't doing all this to move Michael, but for Smith Corporation, for Mason, for the child.
Abigail looked at Emily, a hint of worry in her eyes. "Emily, are you okay?"
Emily forced a smile, struggling to get up with Abigail's help, her belly heavy as her due date approached.

But her determination to protect her child grew stronger, especially seeing Michael still acting so immaturely. She knew that only by being strong herself could she take better care of her child.
"I'm fine, it's just Michael..." Emily couldn't help but trail off.
"Emily, it's okay. You don't have to say anything if you don't want to. I understand," Abigail comforted her.
But Emily knew that Abigail didn't understand. She couldn't share all her worries with Abigail.
As they were about to enter the bedroom, Emily stopped, took a few breaths, and then spoke, "Abigail, I just hope he understands that more important than our relationship is catching the real culprit.
"Mason can't wait, and Smith Corporation can't afford to wait. He's not a child anymore, and he's been managing Smith Corporation all this time. He should understand this better than I do."
Emily's voice was soft.
Abigail only half-understood, but she knew Emily was thinking about the future of the Smith family and Mason's lifetime of hard work.
But Abigail was always good at comforting people.
She hugged Emily tightly, then smiled, trying to lighten the heavy atmosphere.
"Don't worry, Michael will understand your good intentions. You're amazing, Emily. Anyone who marries you is lucky."
A sudden, urgent phone ring broke the dark silence.
Sophia jumped, quickly picking up her phone to check the caller ID.
"It's Michael!" Sophia tensed up, turning to Dean with clenched teeth.
Why?
Why did Michael never contact her first, but chose this moment to call?

Did he already know about that night?
Hmph, so what?
He brought this on himself. This is the price for abandoning her!
Sophia gripped the phone tightly, hesitating whether to answer.
Her emotions were complex, and Dean noticed. He was about to stop her when Sophia
took a deep breath and pressed the answer button.
"Don't answer!"
Too late.
Sophia gave in to her true feelings.
She wanted to hear what Michael had to say, even if it was just to hear his voice.
"Michael?" A cold female voice answered.
Michael didn't expect Sophia to have the guts to answer his call.
"Where are you?" Michael got straight to the point.
But Sophia wouldn't respond to him.
She loved Michael, but she wasn't stupid. She had given him her youth and wouldn't gamble her freedom for the rest of her life.
"Does it matter where I am? Michael, do you want to see me? Or arrest me? Since you know I caused all this, do you think I'd show up in front of you?"
Hearing this, Dean, who was driving, found it laughable.
For some reason, he suddenly felt a pang of jealousy. He pulled the car over to the side
of the road and lit a cigarette.
What do you think?
