Chapter 257
"I didn't mean it that way." Wren looked at her with frustration clear on his face. "I just hope you can reconsider and not turn this into a battle of wills.
"If you're really unwilling to come back to Phoypolis with me, I can arrange for you to go to Urthunia instead. At least with Shea there, he can look after you for me, and I'll have some peace of mind."
"And your hand... I'll find a way to make it up to you. I'll look for a doctor who can heal it." The thought of Clara's damaged hand filled Wren with remorse. He added, "Clara, please trust me one more time."
Clara's gaze wavered briefly as she instinctively grasped her right wrist, her fingers tracing over the jagged scars.
The sharp, piercing pain from that day still lingered. It was a relentless reminder that her hand was ruined, and her dream would never come true.
Her breathing quickened, and her chest tightened with emotions she couldn't name. Clara gripped her wrist tighter out of frustration, and the sharp, stinging pain jolted her back to reality.
She took a deep breath, then looked up at Wren. "There are some things you can never regain after losing them. Just because you want to make amends doesn't mean I can pretend nothing ever happened."
"You were the one who taught me to never trust anyone ever again, too." Clara's lips curled into a mocking smile, but her eyes were brimming with unshed tears.
She turned away and said coldly, "I'm not going back with you, and I'm not going to Uthurnia, either. If you're here to convince me, save your breath."
Wren had expected this answer, but he just wasn't willing to give up. He kept wanting to try because what if Clara said yes?
But in the end, he lost.
Clara's indifferent and distant gaze was like a death sentence, slowly ripping him to shreds.
These past days, he had been living in endless remorse, regretting everything he had done. Every time he made a mistake, he told himself he could make up for it in the future and that everything could still be salvaged.
But now, he finally understood that some mistakes could never be undone.
He should have known from the
start that Clara was stubborn. Once she made up her mind, there was no looking back. His overconfidence blinded him back then, and that was how he ended up at this point.
A bitter smile tugged at Wren's lips. His eyes were red with unshed tears, and he
asked, "Clara, you're never going to forgive me, are you?"
Clara merely stared at him in silence.
Wren closed his eyes in despair. He already knew the answer.
Clara felt a brief flicker of emotion at the sight of Wren's agony, but it faded just asnoveldrama
quickly. She believed Wren understood her now.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Wren seemed to come to a decision and got to his feet. He
stepped forward and dropped
knee before Clara and then took her hand in his.
Clara tried to pull away, but he refused to let go. His fingers traced the scars on
her wrist as his guilt and pain threatened to consume him.
"Clara, I won't force you to leave with
me. But please don't block me again and make it impossible to find you," Wre pleaded. "I'm terrified something will happen to you.
"I hope that, just like before, you could think of me first whenever something happens and tell me about it."
Wren continued, "I know I've made too many mistakes, and you won't forgive me or ever trust me again. But Clara, I regret everything.
"I will never abandon you again."
His hand tightened around hers, both warm and burning, just like how it used to be.
Clara's chest tightened, and she immediately pulled her hand back, too afraid to meet Wren's eyes.
What do you think?
